Q.16. Some students were standing in a row facing north. Only Seema was between
Sumit and Ritu. Basant was exactly midway in the row. The number of students to the
left of Basant was equal to the cube of Kalka’s rank from the left end and the number
of students to the right of Basant was equal to the square of Ashish’s rank from the left
end of the row. The number of students was less than 1000. How many students were
there between kalika and Basant?

(1) 61
(2) 60

(3) 62

(4) Data Inadequate

(5) None of these

Answer: (2) 60

Let, Kalika’s rank from the left end = x

Ashish’s rank from the right end = y

No of students to the left of Basant = x

3
2

No of students to the right of Basant = y

Basant sits exactly midway in the row, so x = y

2
3

Possible values of (x, y) = (1, 1), (4, 8) because number of total

students is less than 1000

th

Kalika’s rank from the left end = 4

Ashish’s rank from the left end = 8

th

Total number of students between Kalika and Basant = (60 – 4) = 60.
