PAGE 6 Rumen Fluke - the facts
How should I approach the treatment of rumen fuke on my farm?
It is important to remember that the detecton of rumen fuke eggs in faecal samples, or the detecton of the adults in
small numbers in the rumen is not in itself a reason to insttute specifc control measures, as light infectons appear to
have no efect on animal health or productvity. The routne implementaton of a preventve dosing regime for rumen
fukes is rarely justfed, except on farms where severe disease and losses have been confrmed in the past. Because
of the rarity of severe outbreaks, such a control scheme would be best designed and tailored for the specifc farm in
queston, following consultaton with your own veterinary practtoner. Such a scheme would aim to use treatment
in a strategic manner to reduce pasture contaminaton, in associaton with other measures mentoned above.
Apart from the economic costs that arise from unnecessary use of
any ant-parasitc drug, it is especially important to treat rumen fukes Do not treat rumen fuke
sensibly and sparingly, given that there is only one efectve compound
(oxyclozanide). The development of oxyclozanide-resistant strains of unless clinical signs are
rumen fuke must be avoided but there is a heightened risk of resistance present
if a single compound like oxyclozanide is used indiscriminately over
several years.
