›› I’m not trying to be contentious as I’m sure there are valid points within the letters as to whether HQ listen or if our Chairman of Council should be making breakthroughs with major companies.
It appears to me that on occasions clubs are focused too much on membership and goals. Again, all for the right reasons, but I agree we are taught to “Think Small”, it’s the thinking small that keeps our feet on the ground where we are.
The piece of furniture for a family in need, the Christmas hamper that makes a Christmas, the donation to a trust fund after a tragedy, donating to local hospice, assisting the community in cleaning up ‘grot spots’, marshalling local events each action creating a knock on effect.
Just like throwing a small pebble into the middle of a pond. Each splash creates a ripple that moves outwards, to the edge of the pond, with energy to fill the whole area. That’s what we do, small acts, strong ripples! It’s the ripples that make people aware who we are, and even more, curious about what we do. As valid as the Chairman of Council meeting with a CEO of a major company.
I’m in no way trying to teach grandma to suck eggs, I’m trying as a new Lion to help refocus so that we can seek “New Mountains to Climb”.
Maybe it’s time to focus on pebbles first? Just a thought!

SPECIAL OLYMPICS SHEFFIELD 2017
August 7-12 2017 is your opportunity to make a difference to the lives of a very special group of people at the Special Olympics GB National Games.
This event is taking place in Sheffield and there is a need for some 750 volunteers to enable 19 sports to take place at 13 venues with 2500 athletes participating.
Those who volunteered at the Cerebral Palsy Games in Nottingham last year will know how satisfying and awe inspiring it is to participate in such an event. Amongst the members of SOGB there are many extremely gifted sports people and this is our chance, as Lions, to support and enable them to demonstrate their talents.
You are guaranteed a very fulfilling week if you are able to help out. The organisation is unable to provide accommodation for volunteers but negotiations are taking place in an attempt to provide cheap accommodation for Lion volunteers along the same lines as at Nottingham.
If you are interested in participating in this great event go to www.sheffield2017.org/volunteers to find out more.
This is a great opportunity to serve a fantastic group of people. Let’s make sure that we give them an event
to remember.
Dear Fellow Lions,
As a development of Lions Lifeskills, we have identified a major need for our teaching resources in Africa and particularly Malawi. We have charitable contacts with School Aid which is a charity which specialises in building partnerships with African Schools. School Aid would be very grateful to receive the majority of our Lifeskills resources and are well- placed to transport and distribute them. School Aid is also best placed to see that they are used effectively and will ensure we receive feedback. Lions Lifeskills are not in a position to give these resources away and the Council of Governors has kindly approved this appeal to every Lions Club, asking for consideration of a contribution of £100 towards the purchase of Lifeskills resources for Africa. This would enable a new international opportunity for our
invaluable resources.
By supporting this appeal we will assist education, literacy and reading for the children and young people of Africa and ensure a healthier future.
Please send your contribution to your District Treasurer or the MD Charities Treasurer Tom Berry marked ‘Lifeskills Africa’.
Many thanks for your kind support.
