Lions CLub of stowmarket & DistriCt
Lions Club of Stowmarket & District once again joined with Philip Jeffries and Stowmarket Rotary Club for the 2016 Bacton Fayre.
It was another huge success! With over 40 stands to browse, and items ranging from plants to antiques there was plenty to be bought . The Stowmarket Lions Den was one of a number of pit stops for refreshments serving Pims, Beer, soft drinks and food. More importantly, there were plenty of rides and entertainment to keep the children amused!
The main arena had vintage vehicle parades ranging from Rolls Royce’s to Cadillacs to wonderful “Land Army” tractors. There was music the Stowmarket Boys Brigade Band, animal encounters, a flying display and novelty sports with all manner of sack races and not forgetting the real crowd puller - wheelie bin racing!
In the large marquee, there were honey bees and hives, judging of the floral and vegetable displays as well as the photography competition.
A real money spinner for the Lions was the competition devised around the parachute jump by The Tigers Freefall Parachute Team. Coasters were sold by Stowmarket Lions over the course of the afternoon, each with the name and telephone number of the buyer, and were distributed randomly across the main arena in readiness for the parachute jump. The nearest coaster to where the team landed won the cash prize! Over 500 coasters were sold adding to the fundraising total of over £1,000 for Lion and Rotary charities.

It was a very busy weekend for both clubs who helped out at the Woodhall Spa 40s Festival weekend. In addition, Woodhall Spa Lions held a Spirits of the Blitz fundraising draw and a PR stand in front of the Inn in Woodhall Spa and members were able to dance and singalong to the 40s music coming from their grounds including a special victory jig when Winston Churchill popped by the Lions stand!
It is not uncommon for Lions to receive unusual requests and it was no exception at this festival. One Lion was asked to look after a jeep parked in front of the stand whilst the owners went for refreshments. Well, where there's a need there's a Lion... the lucky Lion was subsequently permitted to sit in the jeep and received an unsolicited donation for Lions.
The 40s Festival attracted over 40,000 visitors; with special visitors from Hornsea, East Elloe and Spalding Lions Clubs.
