British financial aid to propel Pune’s ‘smart city’
dream –
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United Kingdom has ushered in
hope for Pune’s dream of becoming a smart city with Mr. Modi’s counterpart
David Cameron announcing British technical and financial aid to develop
Pune, Amravati and Indore.
SMART CITIES –
SMART CITY uses digital technologies or information and communication
technologies (ICT) to enhance quality and performance of urban services, to
reduce costs and resource consumption, and to engage more effectively and
actively with its citizens.
The total number of 100 smart cities have been distributed among the States
and UTs on the basis of an equitable criteria.
The formula gives equal weightage (50:50) to urban population of the State/UT
and the number of statutory towns in the State/UT.
Maximum cities selected are in Uttar Pradesh (13).
