The first generation of computers were very advanced to the era they
were in. The features they reflected were.
They used Vacuum Tubes for switching and circuitry.
Magnetic Drums were used for memory
Input was made through punched cards and tapes.
Output was given in form of printouts.
Use of Machine Language.
The computational time was in milliseconds that can be
considered a good computational time.
Drawback of First Generation
Prone to hardware failures.
Huge in size.
High electricity consumption.
Emission of large amount of heat.
Well Known First Generation Computers
ENIAC - Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator
EDSAC – Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator
EDVAC – Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer
UNIVAC – Universal Automatic Computer
