An Introduction to Book Two
Book Two is written for pupils who have learned Chinese for two to three years. The main focus is on the
learning of vocabulary and sentences related to everyday living so that pupils can develop the ability to
speak and understand Chinese, and to read simple texts in Chinese. As they progress through the book,
pupils will build their confdence and interest in making further progress in learning Chinese.
Aims
Listening: Pupils to be able to understand
i) basic everyday words, phrases and sentences
ii) everyday spoken Chinese and questions
iii) simple stories
Speaking: Pupils to be able to
i) pronounce clearly and with the accurate tone
ii) respond to questions
iii) communicate information
iv) repeat or relate what they see or hear
Reading: Pupils to be able to
i) know some characters and phrases
ii) recognise and read aloud some phrases and sentences
Writing: Pupils to be able to
i) know basic strokes and common radicals for writing Chinese
ii) use the correct stroke order for writing Chinese
iii) write or copy single words, short phrases and sentences
Knowledge and understanding: Pupils to develop
i) their knowledge and understanding of Chinese language
ii) their knowledge and understanding of Chinese culture
Learning objectives
The learning objectives for each chapter:
1. Listening Pupils are able to understand the main points, recognise
the key vocabulary and sentences, and participate in the learning activities.
2. Speaking Pupils are able to respond and communicate information related to the chapter s topic,
and to use the language introduced in the unit.
3. Reading Pupils are able to recognise and pronounce the vocabulary presented in the chapter. They
are also able to follow the sentence patterns.
4. Writing Pupils are able to copy and write single words and short phrases introduced in the chapter,
with the correct stroke order. They develop their ability to recognise the basic components and
radicals of individual characters. With help from the teacher, they are able to construct a sentence
using the vocabulary and phrases taught.
5. Consolidation: Pupils are able to use what they have learnt in a new context.
