Teacher s Book

The teacher s book, consists of three main sections:

Learning objectives This section sets out clearly the key learning objectives for each unit.

Resources for teachers This section sets out clearly the resources that are available for teachers to use, eg
fash cards, picture cards, PowerPoint presentations for writing characters and revision, supplementary
listening, reading and writing exercises, and speaking activities, templates, board games.

Activities for learners This section provides a range of examples designed to meet the learning
objectives.

The resources and learning activities in the Teacher s Book have been provided in order to help teachers
keep lesson preparation time to a minimum. However, teachers themselves must decide which, and how
many, of the activities to use in accordance with their knowledge of the local context and the abilities of
the pupils in the class. The supplementary exercises on the CD-ROM provide opportunities for pupils to
practise all four skills so that they can consolidate what they have learnt.
A summary of content is included in the Teacher s Book. The table enables teachers to see at a glance the
vocabulary, sentence patterns, question words, key words, strokes and radicals that are taught in each
chapter. In addition, the corresponding national curriculum attainment targets and Asset Languages level
descriptors are also included in the summary of content. This format will enable teachers to gain a clearer
understanding of the attainment levels learners can achieve.

Drawing on collective wisdom
We believe that all teachers engaged in the teaching of Chinese have the same aspiration; namely to
be able to have a set of textbooks that are appropriate both for use with Chinese-background children
growing up in a non-Chinese speaking environment, and for use with young pupils learning Chinese as
a foreign language. Therefore, we invite and will welcome any feedback on this resource whether from
teachers, parents, learners or any other interested stakeholders.
