The paragraphs below explain what to do in each of the iconic activities:

In each chapter there are a number of new characters and sentence patterns for the
pupil to learn to read and follow. Also included are relevant and appropriate question
words and measure words. Whilst the pupils are not expected to learn to read all these words, they are
expected to understand them when spoken by another person and be able to recognise some of them in
a given text.

Chinese is an ideographic language, so without the pinyin placed next to the character, it is quite hard for
pupils to recognise and remember its sound and meaning. Pupils very often write an English sound next
to a character in order to help them remember. To facilitate familiarisation with pronunciation without
fostering an over-reliance on the accompanying pinyin, we have included a vocabulary table at the back
of the book, which are listed chapter by chapter for easy reference. This way, the teacher can teach the
pupils the pronunciation of new characters, and then set them the task of looking them up in the table
and writing down the correct pinyin on top of the relevant characters in the chapter. This will give pupils
an opportunity to both diferentiate sounds and to learn correct pinyin. The Teacher s Book also includes
fash cards of characters and pictures in each chapter. The teacher can use them to do games and activities
with the pupils. In addition, each chapter comes with a PowerPoint presentation for revision which gives
an opportunity to pupils to encounter words and phrases they have already learned in previous textbooks.
This helps the pupils to connect the old with the new knowledge, so when they try to construct sentences
with new vocabulary, they know that they can make use of what they have learned before.

This section is for listening practice. The teacher should practise speaking with the pupils frst and
make sure they are familiar with the vocabulary before doing the listening exercises. The Book Two
audio CD (for pupils) and CD-ROM (for teachers) both contain these exercises, as well as the audio contents
of the book, the vocabulary, stories and songs. The teacher can tell the story or play the CD while the
pupils are looking at the pictures of the story in the book. In the Cantonese version, the stories are read
out as in the text, and then told as in story-telling, so that the pupils can listen to spoken Cantonese too.


Speaking is an important part of language learning, therefore the teacher should arrange a good
number of activities to promote speaking by the pupils during the lesson. Equally, pupils should
be trained to listen to, and respond to, questions. Questions are provided for this purpose in each chapter.
In the Teacher s Book, activities (such as role play or simple dramas) are suggested to generate practice in
listening and speaking in class. However, it is important to remember that at this stage the pupils knowledge
and understanding of the characters taught will be quite limited, so the teacher should not expect them to
understand every word. It is more important that the pupils have the opportunity to practise in a fun way,
and that they are willing and happy to take part in these activities. The numbers 1-10 have been taught in
the Foundation Level and Elementary Level Books. We continue to bring in numbers and measure words
which have been taught in new texts throughout Book Two to provide plenty of opportunities for the
pupils to use them. In addition, the teacher can do games and activities in class as practice.
